The COP 15 United Nations Climate Conference commenced this Monday December 2nd in Copenhagen Denmark. After finally getting all of my accreditation and registration completed I became an official delegate last afternoon.
Things seem to be moving quite slowly right now, however, it is only 2 days in and the governmental leaders have not yet arrived. There have been so many opportunities for me to meet with fellow Canadians and concerned youth across the world. In addition to that, I’ve met a number of ‘party’ officials: representatives of respective nations’ governments.
Last evening was extremely enjoyable as 1500 of the 15, 000 participants headed over to the Copenhagen city hall for a fantastic reception. Amongst great food and great company I met a number of fantastic individuals from all over the place while the HOPENHAGEN LIVE concert played on right outside the city hall. It is truly inspiring to see so many individuals that are so committed to leaving the world in a better place than they found it.
At the same time I worry about the political will of some governmental leaders when it relates to issues like climate change. It makes me think of the ‘Tragedy of the Commons’ Garret Hardin. The theory talks about how people will continue their actions even when they know it is collectively wrong and shortsighted.
There are so many stories to tell and info to share – I even met the world renowned author Naomi Klein today! I’ll post another update of my COP 15 experiences soon…
